The Open Source Business Model and Your Consulting Practice Wade Peterson, President and CEO of Silicore Corporation, presented The Open Source Business Model and Your Consulting Practice at a recent meeting of electrotechnology consultants in Minneapolis, MN (USA). The presentation was made at the annual 'Big Event' training seminar sponsored by the IEEE Consultants Network of the Twin Cities (ICNTC) on December 6, 2003. The program topic was: consulting in the new economy.
Abstract The open source business model is used by companies in the GNU/Linux software community. Wade Peterson of Silicore Corporation shows how software consultants can use this model to expand their service offerings, reduce costs and retain intellectual property rights...even when operating under Works Made for Hire engagements (USC Title 17 copyright law). A brief overview the open source business plan used by Red Hat, Inc. is presented, along with an overview of public licensing agreements like the General Public License (GPL). Mr. Peterson also shows how Silicore implemented an open source business model for its semiconductor chip designs. This revolutionary concept was made possible by combining their WISHBONE System-on-Chip design standard, the on-line software trading system at www.opencores.org and the GNU/Linux software development strategy.
